Default How about XP pack 2?

JUst installed it. But every time I try to disable my inserted flashdisk, XP restarts! Quite unstable!

XP Pact2

Is not recommended to download in a lot of professional instances. I tried to download in a friends computer and it wiped out her whole hard drive. Another friend had to take his computer to his computer merchant and set up patches before installing. Its has been a nightmare to unsavvy computer clients. If you don't have to download leave it alone.

My computer would not allow me to download at all. I guess its a blessing in disguise. Beware folks and seek help first.

Thank you!
But if we don't install it, we won't be able to install further security patches, right? That is just conflicting!
I am considering other platforms, but I was told that Mac OS or Linus is not so user-friendly as XP.Well, what to do now???

When I installed SP2 the first time I didn’t disable the built firewall etc and I could not even connect to the Internet once it was all installed. I eventually realised that it was the MS firewall that was stopping me so I did a System Restore to a point that I had thoughtfully set up BEFORE installing SP2. After installing SP2 for a second time and exercising my option of disabling the MS firewall etc everything was fine and has been ever since.

I’m no computer whiz kid either. I don’t ‘fiddle’ though. I just set things up to my requirements and leave well alone until I have to make a change somewhere. That doesn’t happen very often.

I downloaded it and it interferred with my Zone Alarm and Norton. Now my computer won't even operate because it freezes and won't let me do anything. I have to spend the money to take it to a shop and have it reformed and reload everything. Never again will I use XP. I am going to partition the hard drive and put on either Windows 98 or Windows 2000 and Linspire. Linspire is a new OS by Linux that is VERY user friendly.

You can pick up the software for $59 or order it at www.linspire.com. Check it out.

Thanks 4him, sorry for the Challenge. WindowsXP2, have been a nightmare for a lot of users. I am glad that my computer did not allow the upgrade, so everything is intact. I'll keep linspire in mind though.

There seems to be a divided opinion on XP Service Pack2 but then that was the case when XP first came out and ME. Some people were very happy with the ‘new’ bit and others reported horrendous stories.

It was the same on the old Amiga each time the OS was upgraded. Some people could upgrade, some could not. But if you bought the computer built for the latest OS then all was OK.

It makes you wonder why. As far as the Amiga was concerned it all came down to the motherboard. Older ones would not upgrade whilst newer ones could.

My original PC was a Packard Bell that came with ME pre-loaded and 3 Factory Restore CD’s. When I tried to upgrade to XP it just didn’t want to know. It wouldn’t even allow me to install ME from my son’s ME CD onto a clean hard drive yet I was able to re-install from the Factory Restore CD’s without any problem. There was obviously a difference between ME and the Factory Restore CD’s.

So to make the upgrade to XP I built my own computer using a new tower, new motherboard and the hardrives etc from the old computer. The motherboard was XP compatible and XP went on without a hitch, as did the Service Pack 2. The motherboard was designed to take XP. I wonder if it would take ME or W98? But then no one except the curious would try, would they?

From that I gather that some older motherboards made for a particular OS will not allow an upgrade without some special software patches that are not included in the new OS CD’s. It is these older motherboards that are being used for PC’s that come with the OS installed. What else will a factory do with old motherboards when a new one comes along? They are not going to chuck them away and the chances of selling a brand new computer with Windows 98 or ME on it are pretty slim. So they bodge it to accept the latest OS by using patches that a major upgrade like SP2 will not touch. Ergo SP2 will not load or if it does it causes major problems.

Then there are all the different types of RAM. One motherboard will only accept one type. Some motherboards will not recognise high value hard drives or if they do will only recognise a low value capacity when there is much more available. There are so many variables and they are not interchangeable.

It’s a bit like trying to get your petrol engine car to run on Diesel. It won’t without a new engine.

Just my amateur thoughts on the issue.

Well after this episode with XP pack 2 - I got ticked and dumped XP. I had a tech split my hard drive and put on Windows '98 and Linux Mandrake 10.1.

GOTTA SAY - I love it!

hi all and thanx for your answers
does anybody know how to turn the firewall really off? my friend's a web-developer and has a problem with java-applets work when running on his own PC. firewall blocks them - so he has to allow their execution each time! he's boared to death with doing it every time the page is started, with every script! but it's interesting to know - the same website works well via internet... even when firewall is off - it still stops scenaries! what to do?
